Volunteer Jobs

View the different jobs and volunteer to help out the MCSL

Unless you check the "I do not wish to volunteer" box at registration, you were not charged a volunteer fee. Those who DID check the box were charged an opt-out fee. We understand that many parents have every intention of volunteering but, with the chaos of daily life, forget. That said, we are primarily a volunteer based organization, and as such, we need help from everyone to ensure smooth running throughout the season. We ask that you make it a priority to fulfill your volunteer obligation. We reserve the right to charge families who do not fulfill this obligation the opt-out fee.

Here are the various types of volunteer positions:

Ongoing for season
Coach, assistant coach

One time before season starts
Initial goal set up, field set up, equipment prep/handout.

One time during season
Weekly goal set up or take down, flag set up or take down, gopher patrol, garbage patrol etc.

One time after season
Goal breakdown, equipment collection, inventory of equipment boxes, removal of old paint cans to the hazardous waste facility, etc.

Events
Such as Kick off, Photo Day, Coaches' Appreciation Dinner.

Coaching, Referee and
Team Parent

Coaching
We ask for parents to sign up to be a coach or assistant coach at registration because (a) there’s a separate coaching form that needs to be filled out; and (b) we need information prior to the start of the season so that the Grade Level Managers can create teams. However, in the event you are not be selected to be a coach, (e.g. too many coaches for age group) we need to know your other interests so that we can help you find another volunteer job.

Referee
If you referee for our club it counts as a volunteer activity (even though it is a paid activity). Referees must be certified. Sorry, although we need youth referees also, only adult refereeing is considered a volunteer activity for a player’s family.

Garbage Patrol
Each week, a team of two will pick up garbage left on the fields following our last games. (we’ll need to be able (if possible) to tie this in to teams that are playing last game on field.

Game Day Field Setup
and Takedown

Setup
It is the responsibility of the home team that is playing the day’s first match to make sure that the field has been prepared properly for the day’s matches.

Assuming that all goes according to plan, one of our parent volunteers will set up the goals and corner flags prior to your arrival. If so, simply verify the following, if not, please complete the following:

  • Goals are centered on the goal line.

  • Goals are properly secured and staked along the bottom cross bar.

  • Nets are properly fastened to the goal.

  • Corner flags are properly placed.

Please note that at Mark Day School and Miller Creek, the goals are locked to the fence and they will need to be unlocked and moved into their proper position on the field prior the start of warm ups. On all other fields, the goals remain on the field for the entire season.

Also note that corner flags for all fields are stored in the field storage containers.

Takedown
It is the responsibility of the home team that is playing the day’s last match to make sure that the field is prepared for school use on Monday.

Assuming that all goes according to plan, one of our parent volunteers will report to your field toward the end of your game to move the goals and corner flags to their place of storage. Please identify whom that person is to make sure that the job will be completed. If nobody reported, please complete the following:

  • Remove stakes from the bottom cross bar (only at Mark Day & Miller Creek.)

  • Move the goals to a perimeter fence with the goal opening toward the fence. If we leave the goals facing the field, unauthorized users may damage both our goals as well as the field.

  • Lock the goals to the fence with the existing locks and cables.

  • Collect the corner flags and place in the field storage container.

It is vitally important to keep the field storage containers locked. We also store our field painting equipment and supplies in these containers. If these are left open, vandals have been known to take the opportunity and to tag our school buildings. If we share with you the combination to these containers, please do not pass the combination on to your children, even if they are super dependable. Believe it or not, we have had kids pass the combination on to their friends, who it turn, where ready to tag neighboring homes.

Volunteer FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I sign up to volunteer for our Soccer League?
Go to the top of this page and click the button to sign up. You can also click here: Volunteer Sign-ups

How early after registration can I sign up to volunteer?
As soon as the jobs are posted you can sign up. Online volunteer sign-ups begins around mid-June. An email reminder will be sent to all MCSL families when sign-ups are ready to begin. At that time you will be able to login and choose a job.

I signed up for a task but I now have a conflict and cannot do it, what should I do?
Contact the Volunteer Coordinator at volunteer@mcslsoccer.org with the position you need to be removed from. Please consider signing up for another assignment by going to sign up page at https://dixiesoccer.sportngin.com/dib_sessions.

What if there are no volunteer positions available on website, what should I do then?
We only post the major volunteer events on the website (e.g. initial goal set up and take down, field set up, equipment prep, handout and collection, hosting UK coaches, etc. However, there's a bunch of other tasks that need to happen on a weekly basis like goal and flag set up and take down, team parent, etc.

Ask you coach how you can help out and please, if you are last team to play, goals must be removed and put back. Your coach will be able to tell you number for Knack Box where flags go and lock to lock goals and always ensure that garbage has been removed from field. The schools rent fields to us and they do not like when we leave garbage or goals out. The latter is an insurance issue, so please help out.
