Why do I need to supply a player birth certificate for a new player who hasn’t played in the league before?

The reason MCSL requires birth certificates is because it's a requirement of US Club Soccer, one of the official/national governing bodies of youth soccer. Each year we register each and every player with US Club Soccer. They provide MCSL with necessary insurance. US Club Soccer also provides background checks for all our coaches (in addition to our DOJ fingerprinting process). We deal with the very real possibility of needing to call upon that insurance with hundreds of participants. Providing a birth certificate also allows the Registrar to verify grade level placement. The SportsEngine site is a secure server using HTTPS protocol. Additionally, all board members with access to the registration site have signed a document acknowledging the sensitivity of the information, and proper use/handling of player information, as punishable by law.

Why do I need to upload a photo of my player for a new player?

This is most important for players Grade 5 and up, since we need the photo for their player cards, issued by US Club Soccer. It proven to be very difficult to get these photos from coaches if we don’t get this at the registration stage. As for the younger players, it may be useful for the Grade Level Managers to identify players while forming teams. Also, you’ll already have the photo to add to your team page so other parents can put a name to the face of teammates.
