About the Pre K/ K Program

The MCSL PreK / K program is a developmental soccer program, where kids begin to learn soccer by playing on a much smaller field with far fewer players than in full-size regulation play. The main emphasis of the program is FUN, and learning the basic skills of soccer (dribbling, passing, shooting). To promote the joy of the sport without worry of winning or losing, no scores or team standings are kept. On each PreK / K  team, there are generally about ten players. PreK / K teams meet for one hour each week; the first half-hour is devoted to a team "practice," directed by the coach. In the second half-hour, games are played against another PreK / K team. These games are intended to be low-key and fun, with no score kept and lots of positive cheering. The kids play, coaches coach, and parents cheer.

Q: How old does my child have to be in order to play PreK / K soccer
A: At least 4 years old but less than 6 years old as of July 31st.

Q: Are there practice sessions during the week?
A: No. PreK / K soccer occurs once a week for eight weeks from 8.30 am to 9.30 am on Saturdays during the Fall season. Occasionally we may play on Sundays instead of Saturdays due to scheduling conflicts. The first half hour is instructional/skills based with the coaches and the second half hour is a scrimmage/game. There are no goalies and no one keeps score.

Q: Do I need to be a former soccer player in order to coach my child?
A: No. Experience is not necessary and MCSL provides free training to all coaches. The sessions focus on soccer fundamentals and on the players having an enjoyable experience playing soccer. Coaching at this age group is easy and rewarding, and volunteer coaches are vital to the success of our program, so please volunteer to coach!

Q: What are the uniform and equipment requirements?
A: Each player will need a MCSL reversible gold & blue shirt with Royal shorts and royal socks with gold stripes, available at All Season Soccer in Novato. There is no requirement for a number on jerseys at this age group, and we do not encourage names on players’ jerseys. Players also need to wear full length shin guards and soccer [not baseball or softball] cleats. Soccer balls are provided by MCSL. If your child would like to bring their own ball that is fine, but it should be a #3 size ball. And don’t forget a water bottle.

Q: We want to sign up for soccer but are concerned that our child would be in a team with a lot of kids much older than him.
A: The U6 program is divided up into girls and boys teams with an even spread of 4 and 5 year olds within each team to make the teams as evenly matched as possible.

Q: I have received team assignments for my older children but not my Under Six player. Practices start next week. What shall I do?
A: Team formation for PreK / K teams occurs a little later than other age groups since there are no practices at the youngest age group, but you will receive an introductory email from your under six coach 1-2 weeks before the season starts.
